Orange Hill leads the way in supporting the modernization of sideshow art.
Step Right Up!
Sideshow Wonders and Human Curiosities.
Kevin House, Butch Anthony, James Mundie, and others are bringing sideshow inspired art into the 21st century.
Atlanta- July 10, 2005 - Orange Hill Art is excited to announce, Step Right Up! Sideshow Wonders and Human Curiosities, July 28-September 3, an exhibition of the weird and wonderful art of the
sideshow. The exhibition opens to the public with a reception on Thursday, July 28, 2005 from 7pm until 10pm and an after party at the Star Bar from 10pm -1am. The after party will include live
music by Those Legendary Shack Shakers and live sideshow performances.
The exhibition will feature sideshow banners created by world-renowned, Vancouver threreminist, singer and artist, Kevin House. Mr. House channels his passion for the sideshow into creating
custom portraits of animals, famous poets, and imaginary sideshow acts. Also, included are banners by Alabama folk artist Butch Anthony that are based on the incredible collection, which he has
amassed at his Museum of Wonder in Seale, Alabama. Among the oddities in his collection are dinosaur bones, Native American artifacts, and the world's largest gallstone. As well as work from
Philadelphia artist, James G. Mundie who will present drawings from his "Prodigies" series featuring portraits of anomalous humans and banners from J.D. Wilkes.
In addition, Jeffrey Pratt Gordon's collection of Johnny Eckhardt (best known as Johnny Eck) memorabilia will be on display. Eckhardt was a famous sideshow performer known as the "half man"
because he was born without the lower half of his body. He started performing in 1924 and became well known as an artist, magician, actor, writer, and photographer.
Vintage sideshow banners from the 1930s-50s will also accompany the exhibition. Sideshow banners were created as early as the 18th century and were used as advertising but have developed a
contemporary following of enthusiasts who have reenergized this fading art form and Orange Hill Art is proud to highlight this interesting artistic genre. The show runs from July 28th -
September 4th.
